How Technology is Reshaping Every Job: Insights from Two Experts

accelerating income career advancement insights Jul 29, 2024

Alex Carter, CEO of TechLeap Innovations, and Saadia Zahidi, Managing Director at the World Economic Forum, shed light on the sweeping changes technology is bringing to nearly every job role. Their reflections come in response to the Future of Jobs Report 2023, highlighting both the challenges and opportunities in today's rapidly evolving work environment.

“We’re all in the same boat,” says Carter, addressing the universal impact of technological advancements. “Whether you're on the factory floor or working at a desk, technology is changing how nearly every job task is performed.”

According to the World Economic Forum’s latest report, technological innovation and digitalization remain the primary forces driving changes in business and employment. The report forecasts a 23% churn in the job market over the next five years, marked by 10.2% job growth and a 12.3% decline. Additionally, 44% of workers will experience disruptions to their skills, with a growing emphasis on cognitive problem-solving, analytical thinking, and technology literacy.

Understanding the Future of Jobs Report

“The Future of Jobs Report surveys top executives to understand the impacts of technology and macro trends on various job roles,” explains Zahidi. “We cover 45 countries and 27 industry clusters, representing over 11 million workers globally.”

The survey reveals that while technology will generally have a positive impact on job creation, the outlook varies. For instance, investments in green technologies are expected to boost employment, whereas economic instability and high inflation could dampen job prospects.

The Role of AI and Technological Advancements

Zahidi notes that while automation of physical tasks has not accelerated, the automation of tasks involving coordination, decision-making, and communication is on the rise. This is largely driven by the rapid adoption of generative AI across industries.

Carter adds, “AI is becoming as integral to our society as electricity. It’s transforming everything, and whether we’re prepared or not, digital tasks will soon be AI-enabled.”

Navigating Job Churn and Skill Requirements

Zahidi highlights significant disruptions due to recent global events, including the pandemic and geopolitical tensions. These factors have shifted job demands, particularly in industries like travel, tourism, and energy. Emerging and developing economies are also grappling with high unemployment rates.

In terms of job growth, sectors related to green technologies and renewable energy are expanding rapidly. Education and agriculture are also seeing substantial job creation, with roles in vocational education and agricultural operations anticipated to grow significantly.

Essential Skills for the Future

The report emphasizes the increasing importance of cognitive skills, creativity, leadership, and social influence. Employers are looking for individuals who can effectively use new technologies while demonstrating strong analytical and creative abilities.

Upskilling and Reskilling for a Changing Landscape

To adapt to these changes, Carter suggests that organizations need to focus on reskilling and upskilling their workforce. This involves more than just traditional education; it includes practical training and industry partnerships. Governments are also urged to support talent development through funding and innovative educational models.

Zahidi advocates for a shift towards skills-based hiring, which can provide opportunities for a broader range of candidates beyond traditional academic credentials. This approach not only helps in finding the right talent but also promotes social mobility.

As Carter concludes, “The future of work will demand a blend of technical skills, creativity, and adaptability. Embracing these changes and focusing on continuous learning will be crucial for success in this dynamic environment.”
